About the Song “Spit Bombs”

Spit Bombs is just a really old track I did back in the day. For some reason, to this day, many still consider it some of my best stuff despite it only really being something of a freestyle. Many will recognize the beat from Missy’s Hot Boyz remix featuring Nas (Eve and Q-Tip too). As far as my rap music goes, I do think the lyrics of this track are a good example of just what my style was about at the time.

This poem started as a challenge that I gave myself. I wanted to write some off-the-cuff poetry like I used to do. I gave myself 10 minutes but didn’t come up with much.

Failed. I gave myself 10 minutes and this is all I came up with :/ I think my off the cuff poetry days are close to over :))

*Of course, the reason I don’t like to put out off the cuff poetry is because most of it just plain sucks (mines and others). And I also only gave myself 10 minutes. I like where I’m going. Maybe I’ll finish it up, clean it up, edit and reword and give you folks something later 🙂

So, just as I said I might; I cleaned it up, edited it, reworded it and gave it a title: Dear Ignorance.

I think it’s interesting that without having a plan of action in mind, I still created something that had a definite theme. The key was to try to chisel at those words until the shape of what I was trying to say really came out. I still consider Dear Ignorance unfinished, but I like what I did with the original text. I metered it out into iambic heptameter…which is something I almost do without thinking these days. I still think it needs help with the flow. For instance I can read it straight through the right way but others may stumble on the rhythm…which unfortunately means my metering is a little off. What do you think?

1/2Remembered Works and Social Statuses

Blogging My Interests

I consume a ton of media. I mean…like a hell of a lot. Movies, books, television shows, podcasts, anime and various other things. The problem is, I always want to write about them, but never have the time. Many times, I will even start an article but never finish it. So it just sits there, but when I’m ready to work on it, I find that I no longer remember a lot about it other than my general impression.

As an example, this site has many articles that have sat around, some for years, and they are all unfinished drafts. Although I promise to get back to them, I lose interest. For instance, the very post you are reading has sat around for days! And, as much as I enjoy blogging about blogging…it’s taken me a while to get back to this.

1/2Remembered Thoughts

Obviously, I do not have the time to go back and rewatch or reread everything just so I can write out a 500-word review. Nor do I have the time to go review it all just as a refresher. However, what I will do is create some articles about these things with just my half-remembered impressions. So, instead of a whole, thought out article, I’m just going to keep it brief and talk about whatever impressions of the piece worked for me. More like a recommendation.

Blogging Social Statuses

I would also like to do posts centered on my FB and Twitter statuses. I post many statuses that I think are worth talking more about. Unfortunately, due to the nature of both FB and Twitter, these posts usually don’t have a lifespan past a day or two. So I’ll be posting some old statuses, expounding on them and opening them up for discussion…not that too many people comment here, but maybe this is a step in the right direction to get some talking going on around here.

So, there you have it. This is just an update for the two or three of you that care about such things. And technically, it is the very first of my “1/2remembered” posts…since I was planning to say all this like a year or so ago…

SB Retro: New Old Music by SilencioBarnes

I’ve been putting up some of my older songs on some of the music sites. These tracks I title with “SB Retro” — these are really old songs that I re-recorded (mainly out of boredom) to share with the rest of y’all. People that have been around for a while may have heard some of these, especially if you’ve been with me since Myspace 🙂

Where possible, I tried to find the original beats that I used, but for some, I simply can’t find the correct instrumentals. I’ve only done a handful so far, but as I continue to clean out my closet, more will be forthcoming.

What is considered “retro” by me varies. So much time has passed that there are many tracks that were for different projects that are not considered retro by me. But these particular tracks will only be songs that I have recorded before in the past (think 5 years to a decade ago:) or planned to record during the same time period but never got around to.

I’m going to give each track it’s own post like I do with all of the tracks so I can add lyrics and any additional information. Of course they will also be added to the music page. But here are the embeds of the one around so far anyway 🙂

All Purpose Blogging – Should it Be Done?

In all honesty, I find it hard to reconcile my different thoughts. For instance, I thought of blogging about why I find it necessary to constantly defend Obama even though I don’t care too much for him or any high-ranking politician for that matter. At the same time, I conceived of a post about different types of pussy and why I would prefer one type to another. Simultaneously, I find myself wanting to talk about a particular anime series. Maybe that gives you a little insight into my mind as well as why I hesitate to blog at all. I mean, is a person even allowed to put so many types of things into a single blog?

An SEO expert would probably tell me that it’s blog suicide to veer so much from having only one focus or core topic. It’s a problem I have always dealt with in one way or another. I think the problem is that I fear alienating any one group of people. Now, personally, there’s much I don’t give a fuck about. But I do give a fuck about the people who give a fuck about what I have to say. Unfortunately, since I talk in so many different voices, I attract different types of people. The folks that come through because they want to read more of my poetry may be turned off by my dubious attempts at music. Those that may have read something poignant or uplifting on my Twitter feed may be a little turned off when they get a whiff of my political views or see just how vulgar my language can get.

I probably shouldn’t care. At the same time, I hate to turn anybody away. One reason I enjoy the WordPress blogging platform is because it uses categories and each category can have its own feed. That way the poetry readers can see just the poetry and the people who enjoy my random thoughts can read just those. However, that does not always work. It all depends on how people find my site.

I don’t want to talk about my writing efforts on one page and expound on why niggas who sell crack need to either expand or stop hustling on another. After all, it’s all me. In fact, when I got my domain, my first thought was that I could finally just let it all out in one place.

Where do I put my children’s poetry? Is it right that I have stuff suitable for kids located right next to where I talk about the virtues of prostitution? Probably not. I am dynamic, and some of my stuff is for one group and not another. So where does that leave me? Should I say fuck it and just put it all out there on this one site? I don’t want a bunch of separate blogs, websites and pseudonyms – that way madness lies.

I have noticed that a certain level of celebrity allows you to ignore aspects of this conundrum. It seems that once you already have a following, it doesn’t matter as much. Besides all that, I figure that as a writer for hire, I should also be able to show that I can write about any topic (which I can!).

Adventure Time Season Two

After watching the first season of this whimsical animated cartoon, I immediately went on to watch the second season. I was curious if the creators would up the ante in the show and expand on the story lines in a more epic way. Amazingly…they do.

Adventure Time Season Two, and Beyond – Even More Action and Adventure

While the show still manages to give you little 10 or so minute adventures, the first season ended with an actual storyline that lasted two episodes…and it was awesome!

One thing I noted in my first review is the sheer amount of cohesion. As random as this show seems, there is an incredible amount of internal consistency. That in itself is an almost genius accomplishment, so hats off to the creators. Pay attention, because even though the story arcs do not work how I want them to, many things recur. In fact, things hinted at in the first season show up in the second season more realized. For instance, season one mentions an old hero that once defeated the Lich King. Season two features a full on brawl between Finn and the Lich King who returns, and the outcome carries consequences that stretch into the next season.

I found out after the fact that one of the episodes from the first season received an Emmy nomination, and so was an episode from this season. When I wrote my review of Season 1, I had not read anybody else’s reviews of the show. I probably should have, because there are many things worth noting about this show.

It seems that many people either love or hate this show. For those of you that hate it, there is not much that can be said to defend it. However, on IMBD I came across something that really summed up what this show is about:

“It resembles a child’s train of thought while playing.” – That’s a ridiculously spot on assessment of this show. It also brings up that this is indeed a children’s program…I did not realize that. Although it is suitable for children, there are some very adult jokes that come up. I figured it was just another one of those quirky Cartoon Network shows, which I suppose it is.

In the end, there’s not much more that I can say about this series that I didn’t say in the review of Season 1. I will definitely watch Season 3 but I probably won’t be writing about it. If this review and the previous one can’t convince you to try Adventure Time, then talking more about it won’t help neither. But to sum it up, Adventure Time is a fun, quirky, genre-savvy action-adventure show. It is super creative; the voice acting is excellent and done by professionals. It combines elements of fantasy, including RPG-like quests with a dose of science fiction and a lot of humor. On many occasions, it has literally made me laugh out loud.

X-Men Anime Review – The Marvel Anime Series

X-Men is the third in the Marvel Anime lineup, and possibly the most entertaining. Apparently, the creators put more time, effort and thought into the X-Men anime than they did with the previous two.

About the X-Men Anime

The story found in the X-Men anime revolves around the disappearance of a young mutant girl in Japan. Professor X gets the band back together to go to Japan, find the girl, and figure out what happened. On the way, there are plot twists, turns and surprises.

Much like the Wolverine anime that preceded it, the X-Men anime borrows heavily from the source material, but flips it. For instance, any longtime fan of the comic book will recognize a few elements of the Legion storyline and a few more things to pick up on. The choice of villains was interesting as well. They went with the little-known U-Men and the more well-known Inner Circle.

The anime features an X-Men lineup consisting of Cyclops, Storm, Beast, Wolverine and later, Emma Frost and Armor. The storyline starts with Jean Grey’s fiery death as the Phoenix. The individual teammates coming to grips with it sets the tone for the rest of the series. Honestly, if you don’t know anything about the X-Men, you can have a little trouble understanding the motivations of the characters.

The Dialogue

The dialogue is good…very good. I watched the English dub with the subtitles turned on from the original Japanese. It’s odd how much of the story changes between the two. In fact, I find the English dub to be far superior in the way it tells the story. The story is much clearer in the dub. Although, there were a few instances where you would wonder why they chose a particular phrase over another.

On a side note, the voice and overall character of the Wolverine in this series is much better than the Wolverine from the actual Wolverine anime. This is the Wolverine we know, and it makes you wonder what happened between the two series. Even a special feature segment on the DVD mentions the fact the two seem different from each other.

The Writing

The story is good. In the 12 episodes, there are four or five different plot threads that all come together. I won’t get into it all as there is a lot going on from beginning to end. The writers managed to tie it all together smoothly without a hitch. There was a small hiccup near the end that I did not like, but overall, Warren Ellis and the storyboarders did a hell of a job with the writing.

As this is an action anime, the creators managed to fit a lot of action between the exposition. There is a very good balance but also a lot of repetition. Some of the story elements and explanations repeat just a little too often.

The Animation

The animation is damn good. The characters look great, the action sequences are phenomenal. The crew at Madhouse did an excellent job of adding the Japanese look to familiar characters without making it overt and in your face. It leads to what I think is a unique look for the X-Men. That’s all there is to it, it’s just good.

The Verdict

Of all the Marvel Anime, this one is arguably the best. The extra effort put into the creation of this series is noticeable and a joy to watch. The storytelling works, the animation is superb, and you can tell that much care went into this show.

One of the few downsides was a sequence near the end of the series that I found to be a bit superfluous. It involves cameos from other characters of the X-Men universe. Either they should have devoted a whole episode to the scenario or left it out completely.

However, that aside, if you don’t watch any of the other Marvel Anime series, then you should definitely check out the X-Men.

Breakneck Speed, the Song at the End of Repeaters

Ever since I wrote my post about the movie Repeaters some time ago, there has been a LOT of traffic to my site from people looking for the song at the end of the movie. Apparently, it was also featured on the show Shameless, which has led a lot of people to look for it as well.

The song at the end of Repeaters is called Breakneck Speed by the group Tokyo Police Club. TPC is a Canadian indie rock band and it looks like, little by little, the group has been making some noise.

Wolverine Anime Review – The Marvel Anime Series

The Wolverine anime is the second series in the Marvel Anime lineup that started with Iron Man and continues with the X-Men.

About the Wolverine Anime

Anybody familiar with Wolverine’s legacy from the comic books will recognize the Wolverine anime borrows heavily from the early storyline involving Logan and his Japanese girlfriend, Mariko. It even uses one of the main plots of that story and many of its characters, including Mariko’s father Shingen, and the assassin Yukio.

The story follows Wolverine on a mission to rescue his girlfriend Mariko from the clutches of her father’s and her soon-to-be husband. In fact, the story is pretty straightforward. While many things happen along the way, Wolverine never veers from his original goal to find and rescue Mariko.
