Adventure Time with Finn and Jake is an animated series that airs on Cartoon Network. It’s a fun fantasy series with excellent and well known voice actors. But it might not be for everybody.
A Look at Adventure Time – Season One
I don’t know what to say about Adventure Time. It’s such a kitschy piece of animation. I avoided watching it for a long time because previews of it just did not look appealing to me. However, its longevity and Cartoon Network constantly promoting it lead me to finally look into it. I was a little surprised that it received quite a bit of acclaim over the course of its run. Equally surprising is that the show lasted 3 seasons with a 4th on the way and a 5th in the works.
So, I finally got around to watching the first season…
It’s a weird show. The animation is either crappy or retro, depending on how you want to look at it. The storylines are nonsensical, but still manage to be entertaining. Each episode is about 10 to 12 minutes minus commercials.
The show is about Jake the dog and Finn the human going on adventures of all types…and occasionally breaking out into dance. It’s fantasy themed, and these adventures usually consist of the main characters saving a princess of one of the many kingdoms or just fighting against evil in all its many forms. Some of the storylines are ridiculously imaginative and the show is very genre savvy. The main character Finn knows that he is a hero and lives up to it in every sense of the word. If he hears a cry for help, he will answer it. More than anything, you may get caught up in Finn’s enthusiasm and Jake’s flights of whimsy.
The show is very random, however, there are a few moments that approach pure genius and various parts that will cause you to laugh out loud.
One thing I wished for in this show is longer story arcs. I found myself giddy at the thought of these characters in an epic adventure that spanned several episodes. The first season does not do this, but there is some cohesion. For example, the stories involving the Ice King do have a bit of chronology to them. The stories involving Finn and the vampire Marceline also have a little bit of arc to them. Overall, each episode is a standalone that does not really need you to know anything about the show to enjoy them.
As I said, I am not sure how I feel about this series. It’s just so odd. However, as I write this, I am watching the second season.
I’m not sure who this show appeals to. It seems like the type of show that a friend would recommend to you for those times when you are more…elevated. It appeals to me as a fantasy series because of its imaginative inventiveness, its genre savviness, and its charismatic characters. The retro styling and RPG elements appeal to me personally, but maybe it will turn others off. I think it could be much more epic than it is, but I’m not sure if the show is headed that route. We will see when I’m done checking out Season 2.

After watching the first season of this whimsical animated cartoon, I immediately went on to watch the second season. I was curious if the creators would up the ante in the show and expand on the story lines in a more epic way. Amazingly…they do.
Adventure Time Season Two, and Beyond – Even More Action and Adventure
While the show still manages to give you little 10 or so minute adventures, the first season ended with an actual storyline that lasted two episodes…and it was awesome!
One thing I noted in my first review is the sheer amount of cohesion. As random as this show seems, there is an incredible amount of internal consistency. That in itself is an almost genius accomplishment, so hats off to the creators. Pay attention, because even though the story arcs do not work how I want them to, many things recur. In fact, things hinted at in the first season show up in the second season more realized. For instance, season one mentions an old hero that once defeated the Lich King. Season two features a full on brawl between Finn and the Lich King who returns, and the outcome carries consequences that stretch into the next season.
It seems that many people either love or hate this show. For those of you that hate it, there is not much that can be said to defend it. However, on IMBD I came across something that really summed up what this show is about:
“It resembles a child’s train of thought while playing.” – That’s a ridiculously spot on assessment of this show. It also brings up that this is indeed a children’s program…I did not realize that. Although it is suitable for children, there are some very adult jokes that come up. I figured it was just another one of those quirky Cartoon Network shows, which I suppose it is.
In the end, there’s not much more that I can say about this series that I didn’t say in the review of Season 1. I will definitely watch Season 3 but I probably won’t be writing about it. If this review and the previous one can’t convince you to try Adventure Time, then talking more about it won’t help neither. But to sum it up, Adventure Time is a fun, quirky, genre-savvy action-adventure show. It is super creative; the voice acting is excellent and done by professionals. It combines elements of fantasy, including RPG-like quests with a dose of science fiction and a lot of humor. On many occasions, it has literally made me laugh out loud.
