What exactly is freedom? The United States has always been a country where both the word and the idea have been a little…malleable. But even if you don’t know fully what it means or is, you damn sure know that what little of it you have is slowly slipping away from you. But is the greater good a good excuse?
The Problem With the Idea of Freedom in the U.S.
The problem with freedom – the idea of freedom – is that no one wants it. That is to say, no one wants to put in the work necessary to achieve it. The sort of concerted effort needed may be currently beyond our reach. We don’t even really know what freedom means. Maybe we never actually did in this country. Keep in mind that I’m speaking almost exclusively about the United States.
We as a people have grown quite selfish, extravagantly lazy, and extremely stupid. The stupidity is even odder considering just how much real information is available quite literally at our fingertips these days.
Everyone has become complacent. We feel right at home with having our individual freedoms stripped from us one by one. The “powers-that-be” take away from us, tells us it’s for our own safety, and we follow like sheep. Sometimes they take away from us and don’t tell us shit…and we follow like sheep.
We are not even aware of the things going on around us. For some reason, we cannot perceive the powers that struggle back and forth over who gets to control the flock.
I say “we”, because although there are those that would fight it, object to it or even do something about it – the majority are okay with it. And we are all a part of the majority. Perhaps “okay” isn’t the best word in this case. People just seem to exist under a hell of a lot of brain/white washing and simply cannot see beyond anything that does not involve themselves or getting to that nine-to-five on time.
Each One Teach One
In a truly free system, everyone would be able to do what they want. I am not preaching anarchy, I am speaking on a system where people do what is best for all. There are names for such systems, but it’s best not to mention them in this country.
It’s not what you think though. Consider if people did what’s in their power to do, by doing the things they truly want to do. For instance, some people truly want to heal. Some people truly want to develop new technologies and practice different forms of science etc. I say let them. Let them learn their craft from like-minded individuals.
Some people like to crunch numbers or fill in blank forms. Some people like to draw and paint and create. Everyone should be free to do and pursue that which makes them happy and fulfilled. If more people did what they wanted instead of doing menial shit just to survive, I guarantee the overall happiness factor in this country would rise exponentially.
Don’t worry, the economy would still grind along, there would just be a shift in the way things worked. We would all benefit.
All people should have a real vote. All people should be educated. All people should be able to make an informed decision about the practices and policies that work best for not only them, but their communities as well. That’s freedom.
If each person contributed something of themselves then everybody would be good. Wealth would be shared and We the People would be able to move forward together instead of separately.
Isn’t it odd that true freedom comes with the idea of shackling all of our fates together instead of this crazy, obsessive, and in some cases, obscene individualism that we practice now?
What Does Freedom Mean Today?
Think about the things that we bitch, moan and politic about. Things like gay marriage or gun ownership. If we were as free as we think we are, these would be non-issues.
The people who want guns would get them and the people who do not, would not. The same-sex couples would get married if they wanted to. Free people making their own decisions.
Instead of freedom, we have constant bickering, legislation, infighting, and even foul deeds done in the name of whatever thing is being argued over at the time. That’s not freedom. That’s just a way for those that control us, the ones who are truly free, to keep us from focusing on how much so-called freedom we do not actually have.
The sound of my recordings have been a major problem for me for a while. I record my audio in my room, not a studio. I try to mix it to the best of my abilities, which are, admittedly, non-existent in this area. I suffer from a deaf ear to musical nuance as well as a lack of proper equipment, such as a good set of monitors. Any engineers out there in need of a friend?
I have some monitor headphones, but the stuff you hear in the cans don’t sound anything like they do in the car or on the stereo. What I really need is an okay pair of studio monitors…or a damn studio :)) but neither of those things are in the budget at the moment.
Case in point: I took two of the tracks that I recently blogged about – GunSpeak and WhereDoWeGo – and burned them to a disc to play on my way to work today. Both tracks sounded extremely hollow when I turned them up in the car, which upset me no end.
These problems I have with the sound are due to my inability to properly mix and my complete lack of any sort of mastering on my tracks. There are many services available to do both of these things on a per track/album basis no matter if it was recorded in a studio or not. However, at this point in time, I can’t justify the costs (since I don’t have an actual product to sell) nor can I even afford the costs.
This is a big reason why I don’t like to share a lot of tracks. It’s also one of the reasons that I get highly frustrated with a lot of the music I work on, causing me not to finish as I just can’t get the sound right…or even close to right :)) But I guess I have to just say fuck it and keep moving forward. That’s the motto for the O-10 folks 🙂
I guess I said all that to say this: sorry for the sub-par audio quality. I try 🙂 I’m going to try to upgrade over the course of this year.
And as always, I’m open to suggestions and advice. Leave a comment.
A couple of days ago I tweeted a seemingly asinine request for ideas for blog posts. Well, I got quite a few of them and I think I’m gonna actually use them…all of them. Not immediately, but more as challenges to myself to see what I can come up with given the subject, or for when I’m bored or in need of inspiration. Might be a general blog post, informational, a piece of poetry, or something else. I don’t know yet.
But here are the ideas, in no particular order, that were sent to me:
The similarities/necessity of and for peace, love, and machetes
If you have any ideas for me, leave it in the comments here or elsewhere and I’ll add it to the list. If and when I write the post, I’ll link to whoever the person was that gave me the request. Also, you can use these ideas to spring-board something yourself! If you do, please don’t hesitate to leave a link here.
Now that NaNoWriMo 2009 is over and done with, I can return to some of the things I left hanging. Most importantly, my Eternal Figments of Reality poetry project. Also, there are a few other things I’d like to get through between now and over the course of December.
So, here’s the itinerary for December. The things I will attempt to do.
Semi Regular blog posts! I’ve already started this, and although my blog isn’t quite defined as far as content goes yet, I’m going to start posting all those things that pop into my mind to post…so prepare for anything…literally.
I want to re-record a bunch of old tracks, mostly just 16 bar verses, occasionally with some sort of chorus or repeating line. These will be quick and dirty, just something to past the time really. Old songs and ideas for songs that I recorded in some form or another years ago, but never finished. Each time I do one, it will get it’s own blog post with lyrics etc. These tracks will be included in the “DaEvolution Mixtape“
Writing. I would like to continue to work on the story I started for NaNoWriMo.
Redesign of the blog. I really haven’t made it my own yet…probably won’t get to that yet though. I still want a regular front page that links into the blog, not the blog as the front page.
That’s pretty much it for December, I got more plans for January, but we’ll get into those later 🙂
Wish me luck, and keep perusing my blog! Search around, I’m pretty sure you’ll find something entertaining, or something you’ll like. I guarantee it! And if you do, please leave a vote or a comment:)
Failing NaNoWriMo 2009 and What I Learned From the Experience
Well, it’s now December 1st, and my word count stands still at only a 5th of what’s required to complete NaNoWriMo during the month of November.
When I started, I was determined to get through this and finish it. It was the first time that I actively participated, and I was all fired up and ready to go. At first, it seemed fairly easy. I just started writing. No pre-planning, no pre-thought. I wrote a few hundred words, just to see what came out.
What I got was this speculative fiction story that was looking like it belonged, I guess, in the realm of what they now call urban or contemporary fantasy. No vampires or werewolves! …although, I did get an idea for something like that as well….
Once I finished a whole chapter I got stuck. The one chapter led me to so many different questions about the characters I’d introduced and the setting and etc etc etc, that I couldn’t move for a little while. I didn’t know where to go. So I went back and tried to test write some origin material for who I thought was the main character…and that grew out of control as well.
I’m not saying any of this to be disparaging, I found the discovery process enormously enjoyable. However, I started to spend more time thinking these things out instead of writing them. Once I started to do that, that’s when I started losing ground. Because I don’t like writing. I find it a very tedious and complicated process. Yes, I love creating, and I love stories and I love the finished product…but I hate the actual finger to keyboard, writing process.
And then I got sick…
I got sick with the flu and was pretty much out of it for an entire week. During this time, I typed not one sentence, word or letter. I could have, but I just didn’t feel like it. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I spent that whole week hopped up on cold medicine, sleeping, rarely eating and, during my coherent moments, reading the Gathering Storm. But I did do quite a bit of thinking about my story. I was going to switch the main character or at least have two main ones, and I was going to start the story with her rather than him. I was also going to blah blah blah and lots of other things too.
That sickness completely ruined my momentum. Once it was over, I realized that I was so hopelessly behind, that I gave up hope of ever finishing before the end of the month. Of course, I didn’t know then that I’d given up hope, but with that forward movement suddenly not there anymore, it just became more thought on what I wanted to and was going to do, but no action to back it up.
And that’s where it stood, until sometime in the last few days when I realized that I wasn’t going to have one of those moments where I pump out thousands of words in fever pitch. And I resigned myself to writing out this post about how I utterly failed NaNoWriMo 2009.
Make no mistake, although I did not finish, this has been an awesome learning experience for me. I know what I’ll have to do next year to finish, and I am not abandoning the story that I started. I learned about my own pacing, about thinking certain things through, about what I can plan for and what I just gotta let flow. I learned that the first rough draft does not count at all, not in the least, so it really is true that you should just write it all the way through and get it over with. The real writing comes after that.
There are also lessons I learned that I can’t put into words, maybe when I have a bit more skill 😛
Also, while I was sick and thinking about my story, I came to several personal epiphanies as well. Realizations about who I am, what I want, what I lack and some understanding of what I once thought of as the vagaries of my own life.
You should find that people are more than willing to step up and help you in almost any way you need them to — but of course you’ve got to swallow your pride and ask directly first!
I’m not an avid follower of all things astrological or anything like that, but this really caught my attention. It’s something that I’ve dealt with for a long time: my absolute refusal to ask for help.
I Ask For Help…Sometimes
Yes, I ask for help for small and insignificant things, but I have a lot of trouble asking for anything important or anything that I might really need. There have been times when I did in fact swallow my pride and ask someone for something, but you know, people never really came through for me. This only reinforced my stubbornness, because it showed me the truth of one of the many reasons I don’t ask for help. I hate to rely or depend on another, they will always fail you.
But I find myself at a point in my life where I really do need some help. And then I read that horoscope. I think it’s maybe time I trust in the kindness of others, and stop telling myself that kindness in others simply doesn’t exist, so why bother.
So I think from here on out, I’m gonna start taking people up on their offers. I’m not going to be afraid, ashamed, embarrassed, or too prideful to ask another to lend me a hand. I will say “yes” when someone asks if they can help me out with this or that. And I will not give any of these people reason to doubt me, as I have doubted the integrity of everyone else.
I hereby, do so solemnly swear.
What Else My Horoscope Had to Say
As an aside, my extended horoscope for today was also very on point about what I’m going through, literally right this moment:
It’s easy to see how staying at home might not be your favorite activity — at least, not on a regular basis, certainly not alone, and definitely not now, when the stars are sending you all kinds of revolutionary energy. If you just can’t force yourself to stay in, even if you’re tired, don’t. Remember — you can always catch up on your beauty sleep later this weekend.
This one speaks for itself, and yes ladies and gentleman, it’s absolutely true of me at this point and time.
And maybe, just maybe, the two ideas are tied together somehow.
The question constantly comes up: Can you consider rap music as “real music”?
The silliness of this question borders on straight absurdity. Of course it’s real music. Not only by straight definition (which, according to Dictionary.com’s unabridged dictionary is “an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.”1), but also by its very being; its essence. How could you deny that it’s music? That’s akin to seeing a person’s eye but saying it’s a nose. Absurd.
Why Some People Do Not Think Rap Music Is Music
I do understand and can appreciate most of the concerns that people have about rap music. It’s true that some of it is very violent and some of it, at least in my opinion, is just a bit juvenile and meaningless. But what genre doesn’t have songs that amount to fluff? What genre of music doesn’t have violent songs, and supercilious songs, and songs that exist to no purpose?
I’m not going to back the old standby about how the artist lived this type of life or that type of life, and so that’s what their music is about. Even though I know firsthand that oft-repeated line is absolutely true in many cases. But think about this: when a group of once nerdy teenagers get together and form a death metal band that grows into enormous success, no one seems to cry about how “that’s not real music,” or “It’s too violent and sends the wrong message.”
Nothing against death metal (I even like some), and I’m not trying to pull the race card (although that’s an important aspect). I’m trying to illustrate an example. Those nerdy white boys most likely did not live the lives they portray through their harsh metal guitar riffs and dark bloody lyrics. They are trying to convey a message. They are trying to either show you what they see when they look around, or show you what they see when they close their eyes.
And you know what? There are a group of like-minded individuals that want to see what they see; that understands, or thinks they understand, what these guys (or girls) are trying to convey. But at the same time there are others that don’t want to see it and can’t understand it. That’s fine. You know what those people do? They don’t listen. They find music that suits their tastes and their vision.
If You Don’t Like Rap Music
What I’m trying to suggest here is this: If you don’t like the music, then you shouldn’t listen to it. There is no reason to attack a specific genre of music or a specific style of music (unless you listen to that style or genre and don’t like what’s becoming of it). If you don’t like it, don’t try to discredit it by saying that it isn’t what it is, when you know full well that it IS what it IS. This is music. More importantly, this is rap music.
Do you know what that means? This is poetry, recorded and listened to. And like Orson Scott Card says,
“…people do hunger for rhythmic language. Anyone who doubts me on that has only to look at Rap. Once verse was almost completely dead in public life, it reinvented itself; and if most of Rap is awful, it’s worth remembering that most serious poetry is awful, too. Gems are rare in any art.”2
It’s true that unlike other genres of music, most of rap does not use live instrumentation, but that fact does not make the genre invalid as music. The beats that we hear are predominately made by machinery which are, in and of themselves, instruments. An instrument is defined as “1. A means by which something is done,” and more specifically in this case “5. A device for playing or producing music.”3
Rap Music IS Music, and It Has Its Own Genres
With that being said, rap music is indeed…music. You can slice it and dice it if you want. There are now as many sub-genres of rap music as there is for rock and other styles. What most people hear on the radio is mostly the pop aspect of rap music; right along with the pop rock, the pop country, and the pop everything else. This genre is just as susceptible to pop/monetary influence as any other is. I see nothing wrong with that. People like pop music, that’s why it’s called pop. It’s short for “popular,” if you didn’t already know.
If you don’t want to hear any of that, you can easily find rap music that talks about other things. Uplifting rap music, political rap music, Christian rap music, rap/rock music, hip-hop music (yes there is a nicely subtle difference between the two, rap is only an element of hip hop).
You can get your overly lyrical scientifical metaphysical Canibus fix. You can get your witty/serious thought-provoking philosophy/history lessons from “The Waterproof MC” Ras Kass. And these are all “old” artists. There’s a ton of young people doing it with just as many differences in styles and approaches.
Almost all rappers can give you a nice autobiography if you want to hear about where they come from, how they were raised, how they lived, etc. You already know where to look if you want to shake your ass; that’s all you really hear on the radio, and ain’t nothing wrong with that.
Understand Where Rap Music Comes From
Always remember that rap music roots sink into the fertile soil of Jamaican reggae. The fundamental idea came from there. And from there it came from West Africa among other places. What Kool Herc and the other early pioneers of this genre did is now famous. Rap is fairly new; its creators are still living. If you really want to know why it can’t be considered anything but music, if you really want to know why it is what it is, if you would care to understand what it can do and is doing, then I would suggest you study its history. See what it is that made/makes this genre what it is. I’m talking about rap music, hip hop culture, scratching, break dancing, emceeing, graffiti (arguably), lyrics, black people, poverty, pure poetry all of it.
“She told pretty Marie Laveau that the words did not matter, only the tunes and the beats, and there, singing and tapping in the blacksnakes, in the swamp, she has an odd vision. She sees the beats of the songs, the Calinda beat, the Bamboula beat, all the rhythms of equatorial Africa spreading slowly across this midnight land until the whole country shivers and swings to the beats of the old gods whose realms she had left. And even that, she understands somehow, in the swamp, even that will not be enough.” – from American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Throughout the world, and even throughout history, prostitution has been many different things to different people. I specify female prostitution here only because the connotation of the word more readily implies women. But much of what I write here applies to men as well.
A Time and Place for Prostitution
There have been times, and places, where forms of prostitution were (are) a somewhat dignified profession. Places where a prostitute was akin to a modern-day movie star. Times when prostitution was a sacred, almost religious act.
It’s not called the world’s oldest profession for nothing. Most people today only know of prostitution in the here and now. But there are places where the prostitutes are not the downtrodden, beaten, and pimped out women that we see here. In fact, even using the word “prostitute” to describe them is highly insulting. Rather, they are the women that control what they do and whom they do it with. They are the women that have turned having sex for money into a lifestyle, a viable business, and sometimes, even art.
In biblical times there were prostitutes just for the priests to have sex with. In Japan, the top ranks of the oiran were an enviable position; something much more than just a woman having sex for money. The courtesans of old Europe could gain very high status in society. There are high-profile escorts today that regularly enjoy the company of people of great wealth and influence. Executives, actors, politicians, and people who govern and run countries want something a little more than just a street hooker. They expect women of class.
A Fine Line Between Crass and Class
It’s a fine line. Mainly religion-based social pressures tell us that what these women do is wrong and immoral. However, I believe that when done right, it can be downright empowering. Or, to put it more colloquially, the power of the pussy is awesome. Whole nations have fallen and risen behind it.
To the untrained mind it would seem that these women are giving up their self-worth and inner power when they give up their goodies. If you look closer, you’ll see that a woman who knows what she’s doing has the better chunk of that power.
The sex trade is just that, a trade. Each person decides what giving up something special is worth. Some do it for twenty dollars, some do it for diamonds, some do it for fame and power.
If they are doing it willingly and of their own free will, then I say let them earn their bread and leave them alone. Of course, some do it for the man who beats them if they don’t. Some are born and raised, sold or subjugated into it. But that’s not the type of prostitution I’m talking about in this article.
Everything is Situational
Everything is situational. What exactly is so wrong with sex for money? What upsets people about other people paying for companionship? Like marijuana consumption, it’s one of those things that people will do regardless of what laws are in the books at the time. Legalize it, regulate it, structure it, tax it, and get over it. I think in the end, we will all be better for it.
What This is NOT About
This is not, by any stretch, an endorsement for some of the lower, fouler aspects of the sex trade, which includes hings like modern-day sex slavery, or the violence that sometimes runs unchecked in many of the sex related industries. Nor is this an endorsement for those that hit the streets out of utter desperation, or to earn money for drugs and such. And it damn sure isn’t approval for the predators that feed off such weaknesses. Although related to what I’m saying here, those are completely different subjects and probably best saved for later blog posts.
When I first started looking at dating sites back in the day I was looking for what most men were looking for, sex. Unfortunately, sex was not to be found. Instead, I’d always come across these no-name sites that wanted you to pay real money just to send an email.
Those days are long gone. Even though nowadays my primary focus has grown up a little and I am no longer searching for that one thing, there are now sites devoted strictly to you finding a sex partner…locally. How convenient is that?
These days I am more about finding someone who vibes with me on a higher level beyond the physical. And, there are plenty of sites and apps for that around as well.
When it comes to dating sites, there are many free ones, and just as many you have to pay for. A lot of hybrid sites exist as well which can offer some free services and some paid or premium features.
I figured if somebody was paying good money then they might be just a little bit more serious than those that frequent the free sites.
Don’t get me wrong, some of the free sites are excellent, but many are basically just social networking sites, rather than pure dating sites. The real and popular “pay for” dating sites remain as sites geared towards you finding a match.
Still, different strokes, as they say. Your idea of a perfect match may vary wildly from my idea of one. However, you can find individual sites tailor-made to anyone’s tastes, desires, or even kink.
Here are some of the well-known dating sites that many people report having good results from. Some of these sites are free, and some you pay for, but all of the pay ones offer some sort of free trial or limited access so you can see if that site is the one for you. So if something here looks appealing, then by all means, give it a try.
*eHarmony.com* – eHarmony seems to stand on top as the most popular at the moment. They make very big claims and I guess they must be doing well because they have a very large advertising budget now (I know you’ve seen the commercials). This is a paid site, but they do offer you a free personality profile (a $40 value) and you can view your matches. They say that their matching system is “SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN”. They also say that “90 eHarmony members get married EVERY DAY”. With claims like that I would highly suggest you give it a try.

Perhaps “okay” isn’t the best word in this case. What does freedom mean to you?
