Blog Post Ideas

I'm always looking for ideas and inspiration — I’m always looking for ideas and inspiration

A couple of days ago I tweeted a seemingly asinine request for ideas for blog posts. Well, I got quite a few of them and I think I’m gonna actually use them…all of them. Not immediately, but more as challenges to myself to see what I can come up with given the subject, or for when I’m bored or in need of inspiration. Might be a general blog post, informational, a piece of poetry, or something else. I don’t know yet.

Finished

The time before – the build up
The time after – thought
In between there is the void
In that void there is me

Anger has caused my hands to bleed

December 2009 Plans

Now that NaNoWriMo 2009 is over and done with, I can return to some of the things I left hanging. Most importantly, my Eternal Figments of Reality poetry project. Also, there are a few other things I’d like to get through between now and over the course of December.

So, here’s the itinerary for December. The things I will attempt to do.

Semi Regular blog posts! I’ve already started this, and although my blog isn’t quite defined as far as content goes yet, I’m going to start posting all those things that pop into my mind to post…so prepare for anything…literally.

I want to re-record a bunch of old tracks, mostly just 16 bar verses, occasionally with some sort of chorus or repeating line. These will be quick and dirty, just something to past the time really. Old songs and ideas for songs that I recorded in some form or another years ago, but never finished. Each time I do one, it will get it’s own blog post with lyrics etc. These tracks will be included in the “DaEvolution Mixtape“

Writing. I would like to continue to work on the story I started for NaNoWriMo.

Eternal Figments of Reality – gotta move it along and get it done.

Redesign of the blog. I really haven’t made it my own yet…probably won’t get to that yet though. I still want a regular front page that links into the blog, not the blog as the front page.

That’s pretty much it for December, I got more plans for January, but we’ll get into those later 🙂

Failing NaNoWriMo 2009

Failing NaNoWriMo 2009 and What I Learned From the Experience

Well, it’s now December 1st, and my word count stands still at only a 5th of what’s required to complete NaNoWriMo during the month of November.

When I started, I was determined to get through this and finish it. It was the first time that I actively participated, and I was all fired up and ready to go. At first, it seemed fairly easy. I just started writing. No pre-planning, no pre-thought. I wrote a few hundred words, just to see what came out.

What I got was this speculative fiction story that was looking like it belonged, I guess, in the realm of what they now call urban or contemporary fantasy. No vampires or werewolves! …although, I did get an idea for something like that as well….

Once I finished a whole chapter I got stuck. The one chapter led me to so many different questions about the characters I’d introduced and the setting and etc etc etc, that I couldn’t move for a little while. I didn’t know where to go. So I went back and tried to test write some origin material for who I thought was the main character…and that grew out of control as well.

I’m not saying any of this to be disparaging, I found the discovery process enormously enjoyable. However, I started to spend more time thinking these things out instead of writing them. Once I started to do that, that’s when I started losing ground. Because I don’t like writing. I find it a very tedious and complicated process. Yes, I love creating, and I love stories and I love the finished product…but I hate the actual finger to keyboard, writing process.

And then I got sick…

I got sick with the flu and was pretty much out of it for an entire week. During this time, I typed not one sentence, word or letter. I could have, but I just didn’t feel like it. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I spent that whole week hopped up on cold medicine, sleeping, rarely eating and, during my coherent moments, reading the Gathering Storm. But I did do quite a bit of thinking about my story. I was going to switch the main character or at least have two main ones, and I was going to start the story with her rather than him. I was also going to blah blah blah and lots of other things too.

That sickness completely ruined my momentum. Once it was over, I realized that I was so hopelessly behind, that I gave up hope of ever finishing before the end of the month. Of course, I didn’t know then that I’d given up hope, but with that forward movement suddenly not there anymore, it just became more thought on what I wanted to and was going to do, but no action to back it up.

And that’s where it stood, until sometime in the last few days when I realized that I wasn’t going to have one of those moments where I pump out thousands of words in fever pitch. And I resigned myself to writing out this post about how I utterly failed NaNoWriMo 2009.

Make no mistake, although I did not finish, this has been an awesome learning experience for me. I know what I’ll have to do next year to finish, and I am not abandoning the story that I started. I learned about my own pacing, about thinking certain things through, about what I can plan for and what I just gotta let flow. I learned that the first rough draft does not count at all, not in the least, so it really is true that you should just write it all the way through and get it over with. The real writing comes after that.

There are also lessons I learned that I can’t put into words, maybe when I have a bit more skill 😛

Also, while I was sick and thinking about my story, I came to several personal epiphanies as well. Realizations about who I am, what I want, what I lack and some understanding of what I once thought of as the vagaries of my own life.

Yea…NaNoWriMo did that for me 🙂

…and I guess the flu gets some credit too 😛

Asking for Help

Today, my horoscope had this to say:

You should find that people are more than willing to step up and help you in almost any way you need them to — but of course you’ve got to swallow your pride and ask directly first!

I’m not an avid follower of all things astrological or anything like that, but this really caught my attention. It’s something that I’ve dealt with for a long time: my absolute refusal to ask for help.

I Ask For Help…Sometimes

Yes, I ask for help for small and insignificant things, but I have a lot of trouble asking for anything important or anything that I might really need. There have been times when I did in fact swallow my pride and ask someone for something, but you know, people never really came through for me. This only reinforced my stubbornness, because it showed me the truth of one of the many reasons I don’t ask for help. I hate to rely or depend on another, they will always fail you.

But I find myself at a point in my life where I really do need some help. And then I read that horoscope. I think it’s maybe time I trust in the kindness of others, and stop telling myself that kindness in others simply doesn’t exist, so why bother.

So I think from here on out, I’m gonna start taking people up on their offers. I’m not going to be afraid, ashamed, embarrassed, or too prideful to ask another to lend me a hand. I will say “yes” when someone asks if they can help me out with this or that. And I will not give any of these people reason to doubt me, as I have doubted the integrity of everyone else.

I hereby, do so solemnly swear.

What Else My Horoscope Had to Say

As an aside, my extended horoscope for today was also very on point about what I’m going through, literally right this moment:

It’s easy to see how staying at home might not be your favorite activity — at least, not on a regular basis, certainly not alone, and definitely not now, when the stars are sending you all kinds of revolutionary energy. If you just can’t force yourself to stay in, even if you’re tired, don’t. Remember — you can always catch up on your beauty sleep later this weekend.

This one speaks for itself, and yes ladies and gentleman, it’s absolutely true of me at this point and time.

And maybe, just maybe, the two ideas are tied together somehow.

About Eternal Figments of Reality

What’s It All About?

Over the last several years, I’ve been posting poetry here and there online. I figured that I needed to gather all this stuff up into one place. I had always toyed with the idea of getting everything I did online together and making my first book out of that.

Unfortunately, I was much too lazy to hunt it all down, let alone do any actual rewriting. Also, once you post poetry online, it’s pretty hard to sell. That’s because you already gave up first rights, which is what a lot of publishers buy.

I think I found it all and imported it into this blog. All poems that are apart of this series are marked with the Eternal Figments of Reality tag.

What About the Poetry?

I think some are really good and I won’t rewrite them any further. It must be remembered that ALL of these poems are old. A lot of them have gone through several different iterations already and are at the end of their rewrite life cycle. However, I’m the type of person that never considers anything “finished.”

These poems run the gamut of several different styles, but most are free verse. Some rhyme, some don’t. The subject matter ranges from women to relationships, from the metaphysical to the philosophical, from the personal to the political, and pretty much everything in-between. One recurring theme in my work then, and now, is the cyclical nature of all things. The inter-connectivity of everything in existence. These are ideas that scare me and at the same time fill me with wonder.

And the Title, Eternal Figments of Reality?

The title fits just what these works are. Well, maybe not the eternal part, but these are definitely my very own figments of reality. Little pieces of me and my life. I’m hoping to make them eternal by putting them together into a collection which I will give out for free.

Maybe I’ll do something where you can buy an actual book as well. But I plan on making these poems free and free to distribute and free to use as long as I am credited with at least a link. I mean the whole thing; make derivative works, make songs, do anything creative that one of these poems may inspire you to do, and let me know about it.

And Then What?

I HAVE to get this out of my system, or else I can’t move forward. I hate wasting work. I also want to do an accompanying audio format. Some I will read straight out and some will just be tracks that are inspired by the poem itself. That’s the next step after the book.

As you may know, there is already audio attached to some of these poems, and maybe I will keep some as they are. I don’t have the time, money or resources to make anything really professional out of this project. But just as the words, the tracks will be free to download and use however you may want. Remix them, cut and chop them, make songs around them or just give them melodies, turn the words to lyrics, whatever.

After Eternal Figments of Reality, I’m going to do the same thing with my old tracks, almost all rap, it’s called the DaEvolution. So look out for that too:)

Here’s some links to all of the one’s, so far, with audio. Keep in mind that some of these recordings were just sorta…done. Like I did em on my cell phone or what-have-you. Some I did on the microphone, so some will sound MUCH better than others. Don’t worry, I plan to do something about this when it comes time to record!

A Day in May (for Rena)

On a warm day in May – sun desperate
To peek from behind playful clouds,
Warm, but not unpleasant,
And slender fingers of conversation
Or music or traffic noise from in the distance
Play the melody of life in my ears –

I think of you.

Not just you, but the youthful
Patterns of your speech
The not so subtle images
That I seek before I sleep

The stance the glance what’s in those pants
You smile I watch my day enhance
You moan I pray I get my chance
You laugh I think that you enchant

I am spelled, your magic works

I inhale your every word
Exhale my love into the void
And hope it reaches through the ether
And to your heart right through your nerves
