One Sunapple St. I asked you for an apple You asked me for the sun Knowing outside of metaphors I couldn’t give you one You asked me for a miracle Right when I turned to run And against all odds I Turned around and somehow gave you one I ate my tasty apple You said I was the sun You reached for it then blamed me When the heat burned on your tongue Sometimes we unravel Our work becomes undone And sometimes we are stunned to find The work has just begun Sometimes you’re my apple Sometimes you’re my sun […]

Waking from the Dream

Waking from the Dream Waking up is hard The hibernation starts with the realization The realization that nothing is as it was supposed to be With the job lost, the failed loves, those inconvenient and pesky things Emotions Then the news says death By ingestion, breathing, walking a certain way And it’s all true, all of it So, sleep Sleep through it all Expecting to be awakened by that alarm clock called Change However, when sleep, opportunities pass, and change recedes in direct correlation to how many of those chances go untaken Maybe while sleep a dream creates a warning […]

"Our" Sacrifice

“Our” Sacrifice poetry by Silencio Barnes She demanded that I cut open my shell and let drip my burning soul onto her frigid altar The steam, she said, that arises from such a conflagration would rekindle that imaginary, burning, thing that we thought we had lost so long ago She hands me the knife, for no sacrifice is sacred unless done by one’s own hand We both held our breath as I raised the blade to Our neck And once again, as before the sharp edge pierces only her And she bleeds And I, with impassive serenity, walk away, as […]

Dear Ignorance
Dear Ignorance, Without going into detail Without sounding feeble We shall say the fact remains that We are different people You ignore my words as if my Slang makes me less equal So what makes you believe that I Would give you a sequel Goodbye, adieu, we live and die Good day, I say, goodbye Without sounding too contentious You are too relentless In your actions, deeds and thoughts Your rationale is senseless You raise flags of moral right But only you bear witness I will not bow, nor salute nor Make your faults my mistress Goodbye, adieu, we live […]

#TMMPoetry by Silencio Barnes

Some may have been wondering why I’ve been putting out a bunch of short poems with the hashtag #TMMPoetry – well, nobody asked me, but I figured I’d let ya know anyway 🙂 It comes from an NPR promotion from their Tell Me More program. Here at TELL ME MORE, we will once again commemorate National Poetry Month with “Muses and Metaphor,” a series combining two of our passions, poetry and social media, and we need your help. Go to Twitter and tweet us your original poetry using fewer than 140 characters and the hash tag #tmmpoetry. And just as […]

3 Random Poems in Iambic Heptameter
Here are 3 poems, written quickly and posted to either to my facebook page, or twitter stream. It seems that since I wrote my post on iambic heptameter, I’ve been stuck writing most my poetry in a sorta semi-rhyming, faux-blank verse version of it (I don’t know the term for it:)) I also learned that I naturally tend towards heavy usage of enjambment…who knew. Well, here they are, enjoy 🙂 Come Together Last Gasp Bitter We all sleep, piss, shit, live, die – We all need food and water We grind, in order to survive We are all human […]

Poetry Writing 101: The Fourteener and Iambic Heptameter
Note: Below you will find an exercise and an explanation on iambic heptameter. You will see three different versions of the same poem, with changes highlighted – enjoy:) This warning was suggested by a fellow poet on facebook I want to preface this with the fact that I may have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about 🙂 Always do your own research (that’s why I supply hyperlinks!) Here’s an exercise in creating some traditional(ish) forms of poetry 🙂 It started with me writing a quick poem in response to another poem I read. Now, this poem was not meant […]

Psychomanteum

Psychomanteum The old man muttered Seen it all before – Vicious vicissitudes – envision youth Searching for something worthy to weep for The old man muttered The children laughed – The crimson splash gone in a flash A throwback to now ancient past The old man muttered Knowing memory is a lie A puzzle, pieces ill-kept Ill-fitting, yet still a useful scry The old man muttered For he knew what we would know For he shared that sacred knowledge With all things that need to grow The old man muttered Nonsense from a distance Go closer then, and closer […]

Sentiments of the Cerebral

Sentiments of the Cerebral is a chapbook of poetry that consists of many of the poems that are right here on the site. If you want to read it on the site, go here: http://silenciobarnes.net/tag/sentiments-of-the-cerebral/ It’s the first part of a planned 3-book series collectively titled Eternal Figments of Reality. It was available to download absolutely free here on the site, but after almost 2 years and over 2,000 downloads I decided to remove the links. You can now purchase e-book versions from various retailers, as well as print versions. However, since the individual poems are still on the site, […]
