Home Away

Wooden floorboards
Brown piano keys
Form a crazy melody
Stained with black
Marks – memories
Of old chewing gum
Left by careless child
Made permanent
By the trod of
Unseeing foot wear
Fused into less than
Intricate patterns
In need of a lot more
Than the push of the
Broom or the polish
Of a mop

Home away / From home

A small grate, obdurate
Defying the floor board’s
Complete dominance
Unused Chimney –
Dust claiming soot’s
Living area – bordered
By ornate figurines and
Decorations, peculiar odds
Curious ends
Picture frames
Suspended on cracked
Walls – rewind time
Old proprietress now young
Perpetual frown, now
Eternal smile

Home away / From home

Paper laid like leaves
Over this landscape
Of earth tones, books
Begging for attention
Yet lying unnoticed
Neglected clothing, only re-
Membered on wash day
And sometimes not even then
As the dirty sock peeking
From underneath the couch
Can surely attest
Haphazard precarious
Room in need of a sign

CAUTION!

Home away / From home
